Gordon's first priorities in his artwork are colour and texture. Paradoxically, his peaceful compositions can be inspired from his observations of city streets, walls and pavements: "Blues and pinks jump from the background of bricks and tarmac". Initial drawing and collage is followed by the formation of transparent layers of oil and gel. Images that were complex become more empty. "The point is to have some kind of antidote to the search for meaning, so when images emerge they are mostly painted out again, leaving little figuration and absolutely no narrative." Gordon seeks to stimulate the viewer through an exacting use of applied colour. "My intention is a gritty but radiant abstraction with rough edges and leakage." [contact Gordon Connell] |
