Hilary Jack

Hilary Jack's work spans painting, drawing, site specific installation and video. Her work focuses on abstract elements of life in the city of Manchester and on painting as an expanded practice. Hilary plays with issues surrounding the death of painting, ruthlessly deconstructing her 7' x 5' paintings by hand and by use of industrial recycling processes. The work comes face to face with its own destruction - but paint on canvas miraculously survives the assault to reinvent itself into new structures which hover around the boundaries of painting. The resulting body of work raises questions about the future of painting contributing to current debates on contemporary painting as an expanded practice. Hilary Jack's work can also currently be seen at Timber Wharf Gallery, Worsley St Manchester in a solo show Wallpaper? until Dec 15th. She has recently shown her 100 Metre Drawing in The Liverpool Biennial (Independents) in a group show Ladies Only. Recent public and private commissions include a site specific installation Wish You Were Where? for The Clore Inter Active Gallery at Manchester Art Gallery and canvases for the reopening of Castlefield Gallery, Manchester, and the foyer of No 1 Deansgate, Manchester.
