John deploys figures in paintings of misadventurous situations which invite you to think of the underlying story. He will begin a new work with a story which is often subverted by the characters as they appear and evolve in the painting. In this way, the original story can completely disappear. "In most cases we are unaware of what has happened previously and what will happen next. Some of the characters are mysterious and sinister, while others appear to be relaxed and at ease, but distinguishing which is which may be difficult. Are they genuine or in disguise? Devious or angelic? You have to decide".
